Document Version History

Last updated: June 11, 2026

Every edit to a document in Rhythms is tracked automatically. Version history lets you see exactly what changed, compare any two versions side by side, and restore a previous version in one click — without ever losing anything.

How Version History Works

Rhythms saves a snapshot every time a document is edited. You don't need to turn anything on — version history is always on for all documents. Changes from any source are tracked: manual edits, AI-assisted edits, auto-refresh regenerations, and edits made through external tools via MCP.

When you restore a previous version, Rhythms saves the current version first before replacing it — so nothing is ever lost during a restore.

Viewing Version History

  1. Open the document you want to inspect
  2. Click the ⋯ (more options) menu in the top-right corner of the document
  3. Select Version history

The version history panel opens on the right side, showing a list of versions with: - Date and time of the edit - Who made the change (user name or "Auto-refresh" for scheduled refreshes) - A brief summary of what changed

Comparing Versions

Click any version in the list to see an inline diff — a side-by-side view showing exactly what was added, changed, or removed compared to the previous version.

  • Added content is highlighted in green
  • Removed content is highlighted in red
  • Unchanged content appears normally

This makes it easy to understand what the AI changed during a regeneration, review edits made by teammates, or trace when a specific piece of information was updated.

Restoring a Previous Version

To roll back to an earlier version:

  1. Find the version you want to restore in the history panel
  2. Click Restore this version
  3. Confirm the restore

Rhythms automatically saves the current version before restoring, so you can always go back to "before the restore" if needed. The restored version becomes the new current version and appears at the top of the version history.

Version History and Auto-Refresh

Documents with auto-refresh enabled generate a new version each time they refresh. This means you have a complete archive of every data snapshot — useful for tracking how metrics changed over time, auditing data, or recovering information from a specific past date.

For documents set up as a Live Series (one new document edition per period), each edition is a separate document with its own version history.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is version history kept? Version history is retained indefinitely for all documents.

Can anyone view version history, or just admins? Anyone with edit access to the document can view and restore versions. Users with view-only access cannot access version history.

Does version history work for documents created before this feature launched? Version history tracks changes going forward from when it was enabled. Documents created before the feature launched may not have complete history for edits made before that point.

What counts as a "version"? Each time a document is saved — whether from a manual edit, an AI regeneration, or an auto-refresh — a new version is created.
