Why Connect Google Sheets to Your Key Results and Initiatives
If you're already tracking metrics in Google Sheets, connecting them to your Key Results or Initiatives eliminates manual copying. Your progress updates automatically whenever your spreadsheet changes, keeping your OKRs current without extra work.
This works best when you have a single metric in a sheet (like revenue, customer count, or project completion percentage) that directly maps to your Key Result or initiative.

Before You Connect
Check your workspace integrations: Your administrator controls which integrations are available. If you don't see Google Sheets as an option, ask your administrator to enable or request it.
Verify your Google account access: You need at least view access to the Google Sheet containing your data. The sheet can be one you created or one shared with you by others.
Setting Up Your Google Sheets Connection
Connect During Key Result Creation (Recommended)
The easiest time to set up your connection is when you're first creating your Key Result or Initiative:
Create your Key Result or Initiative
Click More on the detail section
Select Set up auto-update
Choose Google Sheets from the integration list
First-time connection: Sign in with your Google account when prompted (you'll only do this once)
Select your file: A Google file picker will open showing all Google Sheets you can access (both sheets you've created and sheets others have shared with you)
Let the agent find your data: Rhythms will open a chat window where the agent automatically searches your sheet for the relevant metric. You can guide the agent to a specific location if needed, or let it find the data automatically.
Review what the agent found and confirm the connection
Close the chat window to return to your Key Result or Initiative
Verification: Your Key Result will display "Connected to Google Sheets" and show the current value pulled from your spreadsheet.
Add Auto-Updates to Existing Key Results
You can connect Google Sheets to any existing Key Result or Initiative at any time:
Open the Key Result or Initiative detail page
Click More
Select Set up auto-update
Follow steps 4-10 above
Common scenario: Many teams set this up during their first check-in when they realize they're manually copying numbers from a spreadsheet.
What Happens After Setup
Once connected, Rhythms automatically pulls the current value from your Google Sheet in near real-time. Your Key Result or Initiative updates whenever your spreadsheet data changes.
What auto-updates do:
Pull current values automatically from your connected sheet
Update your progress in near real-time
Maintain history so you can track progress over time
What auto-updates don't do:
Replace check-ins (you still provide context, blockers, and insights through regular check-ins)
Change your target or description
Give access to people who can't see your original Google Sheet
Managing Your Connection
To disconnect: Click the Connected to Google Sheets button on your Key Result, then select Disconnect. Your Key Result or Initiative will stop receiving updates and you'll need to update it manually going forward.
โ ๏ธ Note: Disconnecting removes future auto-updates but doesn't delete historical progress data already captured.
Frequently Asked Questions
What sheets can I select in the file picker?
You'll see all Google Sheets you have access to, including sheets you've created and sheets others have shared with you. The picker only shows Google Sheets files, not other Google Drive documents.
How does the agent find my data?
After you select your sheet, Rhythms' agent automatically searches for the metric that matches your Key Result. By default, it looks for relevant data based on your Key Result description and target. You can also guide the agent to look at a specific cell, range, or area within your sheet if needed.
What if my data is in a specific cell or range?
During setup, you can tell the agent exactly where to look in your sheet. For example, you might say "look at cell B12" or "use the total in column D." The agent will follow your instructions to find the right data.
Can I change which sheet is connected later?
Yes. Disconnect your current connection, then set up auto-updates again and select a different sheet.
What happens if I lose access to the connected sheet?
Auto-updates will stop working. Your Key Result will show the last successfully pulled value. You'll need to either get access restored, update manually, or connect to a different data source.
Can multiple people connect the same Google Sheet to their Key Results?
Yes. Each person connects their own Google account and selects their sheet. If multiple team members have access to the same shared Google Sheet, they can each connect it to their respective Key Results using their own credentials.
Do I need to keep my Google Sheet open for auto-updates to work?
No. Once connected, Rhythms accesses your sheet data automatically in the background. You don't need to have the sheet open.
What if the agent pulls the wrong number?
In the setup chat, you can guide the agent to the correct location in your sheet. If the connection is already set up but pulling incorrect data, disconnect and reconnect, this time providing specific instructions about where to find your metric.
