# Invite teammates by @mention

When you @mention an email address that is not yet in your workspace, in a document, a comment or a chat message, Rhythms offers to invite that person right where you are typing. You do not have to open Settings or run a separate invite flow: pick **Invite {email}** from the mention menu, the invitation is sent, and the person appears as a mention immediately.

This is different from giving an existing colleague access to a document. If you @mention someone who is already a member but cannot see the document you are working in, Rhythms shows a notice after you post with a **Grant view access** action instead. See [Grant document access from an @mention](/documents-and-library/grant-access-when-you-mention-someone.md).

## When to use invite-by-\@mention

Use it when you want to pull in a teammate who is not in Rhythms yet as part of what you are doing: looping them into a document, replying to them in a comment, or asking the agent to include them. You invite and reference them in one step instead of leaving to invite them first.

## Invite someone by @mention

1. In a document, a comment or a chat message, type `@` followed by the person's work email address.
2. If the address does not belong to a current member, the mention menu shows **Invite {email}**.
3. Select it. Rhythms creates the account, sends the invitation email and inserts the person as a mention. A toast confirms "1 user invited".
4. The invited person receives an email with a link to the Rhythms sign-in page. Once they sign in with that address, the mention resolves to their profile like any other member.

## What the invited person can do

A person invited by @mention joins as a **Member**. To invite someone as a Guest or a Rhythms Admin, or to invite many people at once, use **+ Add** at Settings › Workspace › Users instead. To control what they can see in a particular document, use the document's **Share** button. For an overview of roles, see [OKR roles and permissions](/workspace-settings-and-administration/team-users-and-access/okr-roles-and-permissions.md).

## Who can invite by @mention

The **Invite** option follows your workspace's invite setting. Rhythms Admins always see it. Members see it only when **Invite Permissions** at Settings › Workspace › General is set to **All Members** (the default is Admins Only). Guests cannot invite. If the option does not appear for you, ask a Rhythms Admin to invite the person or to change the setting.

| An existing member who cannot see the document (document body or comment) | After you post, a notice "{name} can't see this document" with **Grant view access** and **Choose access level…** | One click gives them view access to that document; the second option opens Share so you can pick a higher level |
| An existing member who already has access | A normal mention | They are notified of the mention |

The Grant view access notice appears for mentions in documents and document comments. It does not appear in chat, because a chat message is not a shareable document.

## Frequently asked questions

**Where can I invite someone by @mention?** Anywhere you can @mention people: document text, document comments and chat messages.

**What role does the invited person get?** Member. Use Settings › Workspace › Users to invite Guests or Rhythms Admins.

**Do I need to be an admin?** Not necessarily. Members can invite when Invite Permissions is set to All Members; otherwise only Rhythms Admins see the Invite option.

**How does the person know they have been invited?** They receive an email from Rhythms with a link to sign in. They can also simply go to Rhythms and sign in with the invited address.

**What if the email already belongs to a member?** You will not see Invite; the mention menu shows the person. If they cannot see the current document, you will get the Grant view access notice after you post.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.rhythms.ai/workspace-settings-and-administration/team-users-and-access/invite-teammates-by-mention.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `build a script that syncs our docs to a CMS` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
