# Connect Tableau Cloud for auto-updates

The Tableau Cloud connector lets a Key Result or Initiative update itself from a published Tableau data source — a measure such as total revenue or order count, with the filters you describe. The setup flow (Update mode › Set up auto update, then a short chat) is the same for every connector and is described in [Set up automatic updates from a connector](/connectivity/connectors/set-up-automatic-updates-from-a-connector.md). This article covers only what is specific to Tableau Cloud.

## Before you connect Tableau Cloud

* A Rhythms Admin has enabled **Tableau Cloud** under **Settings › Workspace › Connectors**.
* **Your Tableau site administrator has enabled Personal Access Tokens** (one-time). In Tableau Cloud, go to **Settings › General**, find **Personal Access Tokens**, toggle **Enable** and click **Save**.
* You have a Tableau account on the site that holds the data source.

## How Tableau authentication works

Rhythms signs in to Tableau with a **Personal Access Token** that you create.

1. In Tableau Cloud, click your profile icon › **My Account Settings**, scroll to **Personal Access Tokens**, click **Create new token**, name it (for example "Rhythms") and click **Create**. Copy both the token name and the secret — the secret is shown once.
2. In Rhythms, open **My connectors › Tableau Cloud › Connect** (or the card in the setup chat) and enter the **Server URL** (the base of your Tableau address, for example `https://prod.online.tableau.com`), the **Site Name** (the identifier shown at the top of Tableau's left sidebar, not its display name), the **Token Name** and the **Token Secret**.

Each person connects with their own token, so Rhythms sees only what your Tableau permissions allow.

## What you can track from Tableau

* A measure from a published data source — sum, count, average — with dimension filters (region, product, team), date filters (last 30 days, current quarter) and top-N filters
* A ratio or percentage you describe, for example closed deals divided by all opportunities

Give Rhythms a view, dashboard, workbook or data source name. Views cannot be queried directly, so Rhythms finds the published data source behind the view, lists its fields and queries that source on every sync.

## Limits

* Only published data sources can be queried; a workbook whose data is embedded and not published needs its data source published first.
* When your token expires or is revoked (site admins control token lifetime), the connection shows an error. Create a new token and click **Reconnect** in **My connectors**.

## Example prompts

* "Track total revenue from the Sales Performance workbook, West region only."
* "Count closed deals from the Q4 Pipeline data source for the last 30 days."

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.rhythms.ai/connectivity/connectors/connect-tableau-cloud-for-auto-updates.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `build a script that syncs our docs to a CMS` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
